Another Reason to Get Off Facebook

it’s not so bad as long as you don’t mind being surveilled, profiled and having all your data used without permission. It’s a good place for people who all agree and don’t care about privacy, etc.

If you’re really that worried about privacy, you need to avoid more than just Facebook ... more like avoid using the Internet in general.

I’m not worried. I’ve been hacked and targeted for my politics when I was on Facebook. Was just warning neighbors and attempting to find a forum for us to use that won’t be used against us. There’s no need to warn people who already know so much!  Good luck!

Looks like she’s been booted from Nextdoor again.

Dave and Jamie will need to keep an extra eye on the trolling here now.

namecalling is poor form. I have screenshots tho so do what you must, Mayhewdrive. It would be better to learn to communicate without ad hominem attacks, IMO.

I partially blame Facebook for some of the online culture that is now proliferating. Here’s some more news I found today. It just keeps on coming. http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/02/facebook-investor-roger-mcnamee-is-now-a-company-nemesis.html?utm_campaign=nym&utm_medium=s1&utm_source=tw

here’s yet another reason although the Wall St Journal reports the practice of sharing the info stopped as of yesterday. Facebook sure is full of surprises! https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2019/02/23/apps-found-sending-personal-health-sensitive-data-facebook/

What if I told you.

There’s a far away land.

Where people with made up names

Call other people with made up names trolls

And signal their virtue

As to the made up outrages of the day

Before eating a 14 oz pint of Haagen Dazs

And falling asleep.

it’s good to keep track of this stuff. I have a feeling we’ll find out even more horrifying stuff about Facebook. Thinking about the implications of this is probably a good idea and also why I continue to assert that having town elected officials using Facebook as the main place for a discussion puts the residents at risk. This is a decent resource:

https://www.techrepublic.com/article/facebook-data-privacy-scandal-a-cheat-sheet/

I had a plan to have a website with an encrypted forum and donate it to the town. The main reason people came out against what I suggested was because of cost. I would have covered that. I also suggested we involve our high school students since they study tech and are, in fact, members of our community. I was accused of suggesting something akin to child slavery. I gave up any and all plans to donate resources for our town’s use after having received such a nasty reception from the people most vocal on the available forums. Sad!  But I can live with myself.

Towns like ours should be mindful of who they bully away. It could even be counterproductive.

do you believe if you did this - you would be immune from being banned?

I wouldn’t do it to not be banned. I would do it so people in SO could discuss politics that affect all of us on our forum and not be data-mined. At this point, I don’t really want much to do with anyone online because the culture is toxic if you don’t agree with the dominant narrative. That’s a pity. Being cliquish as adolescents is understandable, to be so in a neighborhood hoping to change for the better where much needs changing is toxic. So it goes. This is a nice forum

you provide Jaime. People, in general, might do well to find more civil ways to disagree with their neighbors and elected officials should set an example.

when I was involved with my case against the NYPD and before that when I had a YouTube channel that gathered evidence I found out first hand what Facebook surveillance is like and it isn’t good. At the time I was involved in that activity, it wasn’t yet socially acceptable to advocate for filming the police.

people try to smear others on Facebook and it works a lot of the time. I think bots helped teach regular people how to be mean to each other, actually. That’s not good for a neighborhood of actual human beings.

if you wanna ban me, Jaime, go ahead. I wouldn’t want to ruffle any feathers.

Research indicates ways Bots can change behavior in either direction:

(ETA: But I'm not sure what research states about people who keep posting back to themselves)

How AI Will Rewire Us

Facebook can mine what it wants.  Sheena can post what she wants.  She's also not unique in doing so, as TC members in MW have active presences as well and can be quite opinionated and informative, if not to the level of transparency that Sheena can reach with some of her more detailed posts.  It A tool among many, which poses no problem since it is not THE tool.

People are free to make their own decisions and live with the consequences. I always prefer transparency and accountability, especially in government.

What the heck is that supposed to mean? What does the second sentence have to do with the first sentence. If Sheena posts on Facebook, how is that not transparent and accountable?

Why are pilots not disclosed individually, for one.  There is no one place to get all the news except for Sheena’s Facebook page, a platform with the problems noted here. The Village Green, which has a paywall, will report on what Sheena posts. I could go on but you get the idea.

We shouldn’t have to pull teeth or participate on a platform that mines our info and sells it to the highest bidder to keep informed. We pay taxes.

Ctrzaska lives in Maplewood and I'm pretty sure that he thinks that Sheena has been the most transparent public official in the history of South Orange or Maplewood.

You refuse to sit down with Sheena so that she can answer your questions.

We get it - you don't like Sheena.

that’s nice, Cramer. Let’s hope someday all the people in SO get info before they have to appear at meetings to be against plans like 100-bed hotels in our downtown or condos at the Tennis Club. More transparency actually makes things go more smoothly, not the other way around.

Dissemination of info about our town and proposed projects in advance will actually help things work more smoothly and encourage input. When people fight against transparency I always wonder why.

I really don't get you, but that's okay.  My question for you is this: who are you going to vote for?  The most informative and responsive VP we have had in ages, or the person who we have barely heard from in her 10 or 12 years as a trustee?  She voted with VP Collum on almost everything, so I figure you're not voting based on policy, but on your online interactions.  Have you ever gotten any response from DDF to these posts of yours?  What does she tell you that VP Collum withholds?

With all due respect, that’s none of your business. Do you guys even understand the process of elections?  It’s a democratic process.  No need to try to ensure there is no opposition.  It’s an actual contest. That’s the way elections go. It’s not supposed to be based on popularity but you wouldn’t know that from you guys.

I like a candidate who will preserve our public services while leaving no stone unturned to get new ideas about how to develop our town without making it unlivable or too dangerous to walk down the street.

Good to hear that you have finally come around to Sheena.

cheese

My mistake is that I keep investing my time in actually trying to understand you.  You seem to continuously argue for exactly the type of transparent government that our VP is pushing, but in the same post you try to tell us not to contribute, and that our VP is not meeting with your approval.  You just leave me confused.

All material is always available through the Clerk's office, but in the era of social media everyone wants all information immediately at their finger tips.

That said, I challenge you to share a SINGLE meaningful post from Deborah Davis Ford on any platform - on NextDoor, on MOL, on Village Green or in any Facebook Groups (outside of her own personal FB page) during her 12 years on the Board that provided transparency on any issue.  One...just share one with us.  We'll wait.
