Creatures in the news — winged, four-footed, cute or scary

The puppies, above post, are believed to have been part of the US Customs breeding program.
The program is a spin off from an Australian government sponsored breeding program. They have been breeding dogs for military & police use for over 30 years (with superior results).

Paws Across the Pacific

hope you don’t  object to my using Aussie puppies — but they gave a great visual for the link I posted!

Why should we object?? They’re cute, and do an awesome job. ‘Absolutely no-one is above suspicion’  smile

While this is an insect, rather than an animal, the bird fills the bill! I learned that the praying mantis was a threat to hummingbirds several years ago and found it hard to believe.

Here is a photo to make a believer out of me....

Taking better care of our feathered friends — and ourselves — are good things...

It’s not ‘ticked off’, just doesn’t like intruders….. actually a lovely bird.

Did you read about the big wood moth??

Fascinating that the female adults don’t feed and they rarely fly.

There’s also an article about these wonderful butterflies, now possibly extinct

If you see one of these creatures in your backyard, be happy!

That opossum looks like a fluffy doll, nothing like our furred ‘tradies in army boots’ that march across your roof in the middle of the night, barking for s3x…! They don’t even seem related cheese (I think they are)

I just read a quite disturbing article about animal cruelty, and thought to alert MOLers especially anyone who walks near waterways or observes water fowl: please watch for people doing stupid things to water fowl, such as ‘hooding’ swans with socks

 OMG!

Hot weather alert for our four footed friends....

Thought you might find this project heartwarming. @marksierra, and all Melburnians, stay strong! You’ll get through this lockdown, hopefully with no/few new cases, and then an easy winter.

Without a doubt, the past year and a half of lockdown and fear would have been impossible to endure without my cat, Harry, for companionship, games, cuddles — a very lovable security blanket during this pandemic. Brought him home from the shelter in the fall of 2019.

Always by my side...

Who’s discovered Tico and Frank, the delightful musical duo on YouTube?

And this musical clip, posted just before Frank and ‘Mrs Frank’ (I think she’s Gina) left for a short vacation earlier this week:

Canaries were always in our house growing up, and  in my own home, along with four kids, a dog, and cats! Willie (Willie Nelson) managed to be heard singing away amidst the chaos.

Always wanted a parrot, though.

There was a report on this on the CBC this morning.  The devils are actually substantially cuter than you would be led to believe by Bugs Bunny but they do make a crazy racket.

Australia Is Reintroducing Tasmanian Devils, Which May Help with Feral Cat Control

Our media have also reported declines in revival colonies probably due to drought and fires, leading to increased predation by feral dogs (not necessarily dingos) and feral pigs. @marksierra might be able to find the report I'm remembering.

Saw the Devil at the wonderful Sydney Zoo a few years back — a really scary looking animal!

This isn't the article I remembered but another that was recently in our news. Demonstrates how well-meaning scientific intent can have disastrous results:
