And another door opens............tomorrow...Friday

Just as there is something that does not like a wall........there is something that does not like an empty restaurant.

Abril Cocina  has left us.  The owner of Village Coffee is fulfilling a long standing idea.  Yesterday he signed a lease with the building owner.  He will be opening a new restaurant.........name as yet unknown but style in the Mediterranean mode.  Dishes like hummus, felafel and all those healthy items you should be eating will be featured.

Some structural changes are needed  so he is looking for a June opening.

Will Village Coffee be staying with us?

The ancient Greeks believed that Delphi was the center of the universe. Through out Delphi there are numerous out croppings representing ceremonial navels.  The damn things are easy to trip over.

Village Coffee is the epi center of Maplewood and will remain as long as life is sustainable.

The new Mediterranean restaurant is a long held idea of Mr. Patel.

He also has a coffee plus restaurant in Metuchen near the train station as well as another full service restaurant in either Basking Ridge or Bedminster.

Mr. Patel is, and has always been the real deal. A Maplewood pillar of stability, and good business practices.  grin

Like Delphi, are there fumes at Village Coffee coming from the grounds giving people visions?

Bad form Dave to ask a question when I am thousands of miles away...........However yes I will play.  From Naflio Greece using an internet cafe computer that only features lettering in German and Greek...........the fumes in Village Coffee are the purest coffee odors.  They are so pure I have even seen them persuade our TC to govern wisely.  Added note........in Greece there are no artifical sweetners offered to go with your coffee or tea.  No pink, yellow or blue packets.  Sugar only in shakers as we use them or premeasured straws containing brown or white sugar.

You know, years ago I remember being at this same hotel.  At breakfast I met a young Canadian.  He had a theory that many years ago there were fissures near the top of Mt. Olympus.  They emited gasses which caused an halucinagenic state to the climber.........who is already exhausted from the climb.  These gases caused visions of Ares, Posidon and other gods. He had equiptment to trace for minute elements of gas.  He invited me to join.  I defered,   telling him I had to wash my socks.

Projected date of opening for the new restaurant at the site of the old April Cucina is June 17

Mediterranean style dishes to be served.  Dancing in the aisles is encouraged.  Web-site to be published

It's interesting how in certain locations, the restaurants seem to turn over every few years while in other locations the same restaurant has been there for 10, 15, 20 years.  Sometimes these locations are right next to each other or very close.

Does this have to do more with the space/location or the restaurants in those locations?

Some of the spaces are so small, that unless you come up with a real winner, they cannot make a living in the long run.

I think if you have a really good product that a lot of people like you've got the best shot at enduring success. But other factors certainly come into play. Those small storefronts have to be challenging unless you do a brisk takeout business as well. Diner turnover is critical for a sit-down restaurant especially a small one.

But I left my heart in the islands.  Not to worry.  There are about 1000 populated Greek islands to visit.  I will never be bored.
