A question for the plumbers out there about hot water heat boilers

Can the water be shut-off for two weeks during the winter, if the thermostat is set at 60 degrees and the water heater is set at pilot?

Thanks.

Although not a plumber, if you have steam boiler with an automatic water feed, turning the main off might not be a good idea.

rhw - It's not a steam boiler. It's a hot water heating system - one zone. I usually leave the water on when we're away, but would like to turn it off if it's possible.

Piggyback off topic a bit...have you found setting the thermostat at 60 while you’re away in the winter sufficient to prevent pipes freezing? How low can one go and still be safe? I’m going away for 8 days next week and would rather not heat an empty house. I have a gas heating and gas hot water boiler if it helps. Thanks.

ElizMcCord - I actually set my thermostat at 62-64 degrees, but my thermostat is off. It's the old type Honeywell thermostat. I have a digital thermostat right above it for the a/c, and when I set the thermostat at 62-64, it's actually about 70 degrees. I think if the thermostat was accurate, 62 would be too cold.

I think that the answer to my question in my OP is that unless I have a low water shut-off, even though my hot water heating system is a closed system, I should not turn off the water. I don't have a low water shut-off. They weren't generally installed with boilers at the time ours was installed.

My Honeywell thermometer sets 62 as the default setting when no one is at home. Can't imagine that would be too cold, especially if the thermostat is in the coldest room of the house.

fed123 - You're probably right. Right now I'm trying to deal with a frozen cold water line in my basement that goes to our washing machine and utility sink. I thought that I allowed it to drip but I guess it wasn't enough. This is why I'd like to turn the water off when we're away - last year, we allowed the faucet to drip when we were away.
