motor a will be damaged with a rheostat. Change the pulley sizes to change the speed. Motor b will probably be okay, the switch will probably die first.

Hi,
I have several questions about making changes to electric motors.
A) I have a large heavy motor that uses a belt pulley and arbor system to drive a grinder//polisher at a bazillion rpm. I’d. Like to step that down. Someone said to just put a rheostat in the poweer line (my orig idea, too) someone else says this will cause damage/failure of the motor. What to do? Tool is used rather infrequently.
B) My old Cuisinart, sans pulse feature, is stuck on all the time. I stop it by unplugging it. An in—line switch will cure that easily. Will pulsing the switch cause any significant damage to the motor. Machine is old but runs smoothly and is strong; Only used once a week.
