"At Long Last, a New Rail Tunnel Under the Hudson River Can Be Built"

what is it, 10 years overdue?

Thanks Christie.

So, the newly passed infrastructure bill should help with this, right?

ETA -- posting to an old thread in light of recent news

Article must have been mothballed, waiting for this day. Cuomo is mentioned in the end as if he’s still Governor.

Thanks Christie.

The ARC tunnel would have been completed three years ago. That was the projected date at any rate, but you have to figure it would be up and running by now.

The article is from May, when the thread was created. PVW revived it for this day.

 Ah.

Didn't mean to create confusion -- when new events pertain to previously discussed items, I like to reference the earlier discussions rather than make a new thread. My own small attempt at fighting the decontextualizing nature of the internet.

ETA -- I might start explicitly noting when reviving old threads the date difference, to make this clear.

they better get moving on it quick before the minds in power ( soon maybe) change their minds

See Jim’s avatar. We have to make allowances.

Lol. I did live in Queens for a long time, so to the extent that I follow baseball at all,  avatar LGTM ;-)

I’m told good things come to those who wait. And wait. And wait…

Like tunnels. And titles.

The question is which will come first. My money is on the tunnel.

As if there’s any other kind.

I see that a Janine Bauer is on the Gateway Development Commission.

Anyone know if this is South Orange’s own Janine Bauer?

I’d love to work on this project!

It is South Orange's Janine Bauer.

Hudson River Tunnel Project Moves Ahead as States Agree to Share Costs (NYT)

For the last 20 years, the plan to dig new train tunnels under the Hudson River — among the most ambitious and important transportation projects in the country — has been repeatedly tripped up by political wrangling.

So when the governors of New York and New Jersey agreed on Tuesday to split evenly their share of the $14 billion first phase of the project — known as Gateway — the announcement struck a familiar note.

After all, two different governors had reached a similar agreement in 2015, when Chris Christie was New Jersey’s chief executive and Andrew M. Cuomo was still in charge in Albany. To say that progress on the tunnels has been slow since then would be an understatement.

While the actual digging of the tunnels is still at least more than a year away, the announcement on Tuesday was a sign that Gateway might finally be moving forward.

The project’s planners are racing to lock up federal funding while they have support from the Biden administration and Democratic leaders in Washington.

Before the federal government could agree to pay half or more of the cost, the two states had to come to an understanding about splitting the local share. The states did not specify how they planned to pay for their portions, but New Jersey has previously said that it would raise some of its share by issuing bonds.

As an aside the new Penn Station is quite refreshing.

The project will take years. What happens if a Republican administration takes over in 2024 and they cancel funding?

The article fails to mention that all Amtrak trains traveling through New York City go through this tunnel.  It's not just NJ Transit commuters using the tunnel.

Poorly written.

The current tunnels belong to Amtrak and NJ transit is allowed to use them is my understanding.

The existing tunnels are the property of Amtrak.  Who are the owners to be of the proposed tunnels?  Just wondering because if after all the years of Amtrak bumping our NJT trains when a problem arises in favor of their own, when will we be able to return the favor.
