He provides individual instruction to students of all ages and levels. His teaching approach is relaxed and starts with establishing rapport with the student. He believes that learning the guitar should be fun for students, but students are expected to practice regularly and work on the material he gives them. Courtney holds a recital for all interested students in the late spring. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Courtney lives in Maplewood with his wife and 13 year old son and teaches in his home. He hales from Baltimore originally, where he studied with Larry Wooldridge, attended Peabody Prep, and played in the Peabody Jazz Ensemble, directed by Carroll Skinner. He graduated from the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, where he also studied privately with Joe Diorio. He has done extensive touring both in the U.S and internationally with several artists including Bobby Womack, Ben. E. King, Petula Clark, Alphonse Mouzon, Garland Jeffries, and Charles Earland. His Broadway work includes Smokey Joe's Cafe, Footloose, Swing, Saturday Night Fever, Good Vibrations, The Wedding Singer, and Hairspray. He has also accompanied the New York City Gay Men's Chorus. Courtney's guitar playing can be heard on recordings, theme songs and TV commercials. TEACHING EXPERIENCE: Courtney taught summer school at the Musicians Institute. He taught for five years at the Rockland Conservatory of Music in Spring Valley, NY and was an Adjunct Guitar Instructor for two and a half years at New York University, Steinhart School of Education, Music & Performing Arts Professions. He also taught at the Crestwood Music Education Center in Eastchester, NY. Currently he is Guitar Instructor at Newark Academy in Livingston, NJ. He has been on the faculty of the Goucher College Summer Arts Institute Jazz Program, teaching guitar, jazz guitar history, and leading ensembles and improvisation classes. 30 minutes $35/45 minutes $50/60 minutes $65 Will travel to student's home for additional fee
